Secondary School Admissions Policy
School Year 2026-2027

1. Statement of Purpose
1.1.
American School of Ulaanbaatar (ASU) is a private educational facility that seeks to provide a world-class international education to students in an English-speaking learning environment.
1.2.
ASU is a non-discriminatory body and, as such, does not discriminate against parents or students based on gender, ethnicity, religion, or race.
1.3.
ASU strives to present a balanced learning environment in which students can access their full potential and engage in opportunities to grow academically, emotionally, socially, and culturally.
2. Admissions Practices and Policies Overview
2.1.
The Student Services Office and the Academic Counselor organize the testing of new students, and the final decision is made by the Principal or Assistant Principal.
2.2.
ASU is an English language-speaking school, and all lessons, except Mongolian and World Languages, are delivered in English.
2.3.
ASU limits the number of students in each classroom to a maximum of 24.
2.4.
Admission decisions will be based on the student's biological age, previous school records, and entrance exam scores. Under no circumstances will a student be permitted to skip a grade.
2.5.
If the seat guarantee payment for a child being promoted to a higher grade is not made, the seat will be offered to the next eligible child.
2.6.
The student will be registered upon completion of the admission package. If any materials are missing, the registration will be considered invalid.
2.7.
All newly registered students, parents, and guardians are required to read and fully familiarize themselves with the 'Regulation Policy for Parent-Student'.
2.8.
Once the tuition fee and book deposit have been paid, the child will be assigned to a class and placed in the appropriate classroom.
2.9.
Class assignments will be determined by the Principals responsible for academic affairs. Parental input regarding class placement will not be considered.
2.10.
For families applying with children at both elementary and secondary schools, a joint decision will be made by Principals.
2.11.
Registration fees are non-refundable if the applicant does not pass the entrance exam.
2.12.
Since the school implements the Massachusetts curriculum from the United States and is accredited by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges), it is not possible to make entries following the student’s file format required by the Ministry of Education of Mongolia.
3. Admissions Process
3.1.
The application documentation must be completed in full and returned to the Student Services Office at ASU.
3.2.
Once the completed documentation has been received, including the payment of the required application fee, the Student Services Office will contact the prospective parents and set up a time for testing.
3.3.
Every student will be required to take placement tests in English, math, and science, regardless of their prior schooling, whether English is their first or second language, or whether they have studied in an English-speaking environment.
3.4.
If there are any discrepancies during the admission process, a follow-up interview may be needed with the Principal or the Assistant Principal. This will be scheduled and must be attended by the prospective student. The admission decision is reached based upon age appropriateness, past academic results, a face-to-face interview, and the results of the admissions testing.
3.5.
The Principal or Assistant Principal will confirm and approve the child's enrollment. The Student Services Office will then notify the parents and the Finance Office of this decision.
3.6.
Tuition fees must be paid within 1-3 days of notification to parents. New students who have paid their tuition fees will be assigned to a class.
3.7.
After the newly enrolled student's tuition and book deposit are paid, the Student Services Office will provide the assigned classroom teacher and other relevant teachers with information about the student.
4. Age and Mid-Year Enrollment Policy
4.1.
Prospective students seeking a place at ASU will only be considered for a spot in a grade that is appropriate for their current age, grade level, academic record, credit transfer options, and admission tests.
4.2.
Students transferring from schools that do not follow the ASU calendar will enroll in the promoted grade only if they have fully completed their current grade. However, if they enroll mid-year, they will not be promoted to the next grade if they have not fully completed their current grade level.
4.3.
A new student enrolled in the middle of the semester will be required to pay the full semester fee.Students admitted at any point during the semester will be required to pay the full amount for that semester.
4.4.
No refunds will be provided for transfers to another school during the middle of the semester.
5. Waitlisting
5.1.
Prospective students may be waitlisted if there is no place available in the grade level, provided the student meets the required criteria for admission.
5.2.
Students who cannot be offered a place in the appropriate grade will not be considered for the grade above or below.
5.3.
Priority on the waitlist will be generally given to students in the order in which their applications were received.
6. Probationary Period
6.1.
All new students entering ASU will be placed on probation for the first semester, regardless of their entrance exam scores.
6.2.
If a student fails to meet the requirements during the probationary period, the probation may be extended into the next semester, or the student may be dismissed.
6.3.
During the school year, if it is determined that a student requires a specially trained teacher or educator, education may be disrupted or denied due to the unavailability of specialized teachers, particularly those who cannot be recruited from abroad.
6.4.
To meet the requirements for a high school diploma, a student must earn all required credits in grades 9–12. A diploma will not be awarded if these academic requirements are not fulfilled.
