Elementary School Admissions Policy
School Year 2026-2027

1. Statement of Purpose
1.1.
American School of Ulaanbaatar (ASU) is an educational facility that provides general education in an English speaking learning environment with international curriculum and operating standards.
1.2.
ASU is a non-discriminatory body and as such does not discriminate against parents’ or students' ethnicity, race, gender or religion.
1.3.
ASU strives to present a balanced learning environment in which students are able to access their physical, psychological, educational, social, artistic, cultural, and sports knowledge.
2. Admissions Practices and Policies Overview
2.1.
The Principal and Assistant Principal organize the testing for new students and make the final decision.
2.2.
All classes, except for Mongolian and foreign languages, will be held in English.
2.3.
The number of students in each classroom is a maximum of 24.
2.4.
ASU does not permit ‘skipping’ a grade based on parent requests. Students are placed based on age requirements.
2.5.
The Student Services Office reviews and accepts the application package after it is fully completed. If the application package is incomplete, registration will not be processed.
2.6.
If a child who is promoted does not pay for their seat guarantee, the seat will be given to a new child.
2.7.
All newly registered students, parents, and guardians are required to read and fully familiarize themselves with the 'Regulation Policy for Parents and Students'.
2.8.
Class placement will be made by the Principal and Assistant Principal. No parent requests for class placement will be accepted.
2.9.
For families applying with children at both elementary and secondary schools, a joint decision will be made by the Elementary and Secondary School Principals.
2.10.
Upon attending classes, should School Administration determine that a student is unable to meet the existing criteria, his or her registration will be withdrawn.
2.11.
Registration fees are non-refundable if the applicant does not pass the entrance exam.
2.12.
ASU adheres to the Massachusetts curriculum and does not maintain records of students' documents issued by the Mongolian Ministry of Education.
3. Admissions Process
3.1.
The application documentation must be completed in full and returned to the Student Services Office at ASU.
3.2.
Once the completed documentation has been received, including the payment of the required application fee, the Student Services Office will contact the prospective parents and set up a time for testing.
3.3.
Every student must complete a language proficiency test, regardless of where the student has studied previously.
3.4.
The Principal or Assistant Principal will organize the entrance examination. The admission final decision is reached based upon age appropriateness, past academic results, a face to face interview, and the results of the admissions testing.
3.5.
Once the results of the Admissions test is confirmed, the Elementary School Principal and Assistant Principal will sign the admissions approval forms.
3.6.
The Student Services Office will notify the parents and finance office of the student’s enrolled information. Parents must pay their child’s tuition fees within 1-3 days.
3.7.
After the tuition fee and book deposit are paid, the child will be assigned to a class. The Student Service office will provide the assigned class teacher and other teachers with the child’s information.
4. Language Policy
4.1.
ASU believes that in order to be successful, students must meet the Language Proficiency Benchmarks.
4.2.
Grade 1 students with little English may be considered for acceptance.
4.3.
EAL support will be provided to students who require additional language support.
5. Age and Mid-year Enrollment Policy
5.1.
Prospective students seeking a place at ASU will only be considered for a spot in a grade that is appropriate for their current age, grade level, academic record, and admission tests.
5.2.
Students who enter ASU from schools with a different academic year (such as January to November) will be placed in the grade they are currently attending if they join at the start of the ASU school year. However, the students who enroll in the middle of the school year will continue in the same grade they were studying in their previous school.
5.3.
Students admitted at any point during the semester will be required to pay the full tuition fee for that semester.
5.4.
No refunds will be provided for transfers to another school during the middle of the semester.
6. Students with Special Needs
6.1.
Students with special learning needs will only be granted a place at ASU after consideration from the Principal in which it is determined that ASU can meet all of the student’s needs.
6.2.
If it is determined that the school is unable to meet the specific needs of a child, the student will be referred to a school that can better accommodate their needs.
7. Wait listing
7.1.
Prospective students may be waitlisted if there is no place available in the grade level providing the student meets the required criteria for admission.
7.2.
Students who cannot be offered a place in the appropriate grade will not be considered for the grade above or below.
7.3.
Priority on the waitlist will be generally given to students in the order in which their applications were received.
8. Probationary Period
8.1.
If necessary, students will be given a probationary period to allow them to make progress throughout the school year. If students fail to make progress in academics, language skills, discipline, or are unproductive during the probation period, the probation period will be terminated.
8.2.
Students who have their probation period terminated will not be promoted to the next grade and will be required to choose another school to study.
