Summer School Programs
There are many ways that ASU students and children from 5-18 in around UB remain active during the summer months. Whether they want to hone in on their English skills in UB or the UK, learn about life in Canada, or life as a USA university student, there is something for everyone when schools ends in mid-June.
At ASU in UB
The American International School of Ulaanbaatar operates a stimulating Summer School Program each year in June and July during the summer break. Enrolment is open to all nationalities and classes are developed and taught by experienced ASU teachers.
Our Development and Discovery programs are designed to offer a camp-style atmosphere, where students participate in exciting activities while interacting with students from all over the world. ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) programs are available and are designed to help students with English language development.
Summer School programs are available for students 5-18 years of age. For more information, please contact Ms. Ondine Ullman at ondine@asu.edu.mn.

_*Field Trip to Canada *_
*Who can go? *
* We will take 12 high school students. Your average must be above 75%, and you must write a formal essay convincing me to take you. Students in grades 9 and 10 will have priority over students in grade 11.*
*Where will we stay?*
* To keep costs down, we will stay _free of charge_ in my parents’ house in Ottawa. It is within walking distance of many of our activities, has 2 bathrooms with showers, and has space for separate sleeping areas for boys and girls. In Toronto, we will stay at my aunt’s house, which is even bigger. *
*What will we eat?*
* We have calculated 90$ per student for groceries, and we will cook almost all our own food. For Canada Day and Wonderland students will make their own lunches and will have to buy their suppers with their spending money. *
*What will we do?*
/-One day cycling through Ottawa, the capital city of Canada. /
We will follow the Rideau Canal through some of the most beautiful urban landscapes in the world.
/-One day at the Canadian War Museum (www.warmuseum.ca). /
This museum is enormous and houses thousands of pieces of Canada’s military history. The displays are interactive and extremely interesting, and include a room full of tanks, one of Hitler’s cars, explanations of Canada’s wars, and much, much more.
/-One day at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, /
/Children’s Museum and IMAX theatre (www.civilization.ca)/
The Museum of Civilization is dedicated mainly to Canadian history, from the early lives of natives to European arrival in Canada. This unique building also contains the Children’s Museum (not just for children) and the incredible Omnimax dome-shaped move theatre.
/-One day spent driving to Toronto and visiting at the Toronto Zoo (www.torontozoo.com)/
The Toronto Zoo contains habitats representing every continent, with over 5000 animals from 500 species.
/-One day at Canada’s Wonderland in Toronto (www.canadaswonderland.com)/
Canada’s Wonderland is a roller-coaster-packed world of high-speed fun. After flying all the way to Canada, we can’t skip this.
/-One day returning from Toronto and shopping/
We will go to ONE shopping mall for no more than 4 hours. That is all.
/-One day whitewater rafting on the Ottawa River/
The Ottawa River possesses the best whitewater in North America, east of the Colorado River. We will spend the day running violent rapids in guided rafts, and swimming in gentle current.
/-One day at the Changing of the Guard, Canadian Parliament buildings and National Gallery of Canada (www.gallery.ca)/
Because Canada is part of the British Commonwealth, the Queen of England is also the Queen of Canada. Her guards are stationed at the home of her representative, and they change shifts every day in a very interesting ceremony on the lawn of Parliament Hill. After the changing of the guard, we will tour the Canadian Parliament buildings, visit the top of the Peace Tower and visit the National Gallery of Canada, which contains the best of Canadian and “modern’ art.
/-One day hiking in Gatineau Park/
Gatineau Park is a magnificent forest in the Gatineau Hills of Quebec (the French part of Canada). We will hike through it, over hills and streams and see beautiful views and dark caves. We may also see beavers if we are lucky.
/-One day at Upper Canada Village living history museum (www.uppercanadavillage.com)/
Upper Canada Village is a town made by collecting historic buildings. A visit here is like stepping back into the 1800’s. “Residents” in costume are all around, ready to answer questions and educate visitors about Canadian history, and historic farming methods and technologies.
/-One day of Canada day festivities/
Canada Day in Ottawa (July 1) is a HUGE street party, with parades, free concerts, street performers, exhibits of all kinds, and fireworks.
/-One day at the Canadian Museum of Nature (www.nature.ca)/
The Canadian Museum of Nature is devoted to explaining Canada’s geography and wildlife, both present and past.
/*-One day for an Amazing-race style contest in Ottawa */
*Students will race through Ottawa, following clues to test their knowledge of the city. *
/(We will take a day to travel to Canada, a day to rest before we start our activites, and a day to travel back, for a total of 16 days in Canada, plus flying time)/
*How much spending money should students bring?*
* At least 50$ US, and not more than $100. Ottawa is not a shopping city, and this is not a shopping trip. *
*How much will it cost?*
/ Since we will stay at my parents’ house, there will be no cost for accommodation. Our activities and food will cost around 540$, but with visas, insurance, plane tickets, notary fees and a charge to cover the activity costs (but not the plane tickets) for the supervisors, the trip will cost around $2500. Because accommodations are free, students will probably never again have the opportunity to do a trip like this so cheaply. Exact breakdowns of the costs will be available in February.
