<p>March is swiftly marching along!  We want to thank all of our elementary parents for attending Parent/Teacher Conferences and discussing your child’s progress with teachers.  Research proves that when parents and teachers work together, enhanced learning occurs and students win! This week and next our students will be going skiing at Sky resort as part of our excellent ASU PE program.  Students will be at the ski resort from 8:45 to 2:00.  They will be back at ASU for electives.  Students that do not go on the ski trip will be expected to be at school and will be attending classes during this time.  I know that many of you are going with classes as chaperones.  Thank you once again for your support.<span id="more-607"></span></p>
<p><strong>Here’s what’s happening March 22<sup>nd </sup> through 26<sup>th</sup>:</strong></p>
<p>This will be a “Week 1” for the swimming schedule and</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dear ASU Parents,</p>
<p>Our second trimester has been successfully completed and it is time for Parent/Teacher Conferences for all Kindergarten through fifth grade students. Scheduled conferences will be held on Thursday, March 19 and Friday, March 20, from 12:30 pm &#8211; 4:30 pm.   All K-5 children will be dismissed at 12:00 pm on these two days. No lunch will be served for K-5.  All elementary children must go home.  The afternoons are just for parents and teachers of elementary students.   Don’t miss this very important opportunity to discuss your child’s progress to date.</p>
<p><strong>For Parents of Kindergarten through Fifth Grade Students</strong></p>
<p>On Monday and Tuesday, please see your child’s teacher and sign-up for a convenient time for you to have this important meeting with your child’s teacher and program assistant.  If you are not able to come in and sign-up our program assistants will be calling you Tuesday afternoon to schedule a conference time.  Before or after your scheduled conference time you are encouraged to visit your child’s computer, music, art, ESL and physical education teachers in their classrooms.  Our goal is for 100% turn out for our conferences!</p>
<p><strong>For Parents of Sixth through Eleventh Grade Students</strong></p>
<p>There will be no changes in the secondary students schedule on Thursday and Friday.  Students in grades 6 – 11 will have a full day of classes, lunch will be served for them and they will be dismissed at 3:20.  Buses will be taking secondary bus students home.</p>
<p><strong>Parent Tips for Meaningful Parent-Teacher Conferences<span id="more-600"></span></strong></p>
<p>Talk to your children before the conference. Find out what they think are their best subjects, and what subjects they like the least. Find out why. Also, ask your children if there is anything they would like you to talk about with their teachers. Make sure your children don&#8217;t worry about the meeting. Help them understand that you and their teacher(s) are meeting together in order to help them.</p>
<p>Please bring the third page of your child’s report card, signed and filled with questions, concerns, ideas and suggestion for the enhancement of your child’s learning. Before you go to the school, write notes to yourself about:</p>
<ul>
<li>things about your child&#8217;s life at home, personality, problems, habits, and hobbies you feel important for the teacher to know</li>
<li>your concerns about the school&#8217;s programs or policies</li>
<li>questions about your child&#8217;s progress</li>
<li>how you and the school can work together to help your child</li>
</ul>
<p>Meeting with your child&#8217;s teachers should help build strong parent-teacher partnerships—partnerships that are needed if you and your child&#8217;s teachers are to reach your common goal of helping your child get the best education possible.  These conferences are an important part of our school program. It is a time to share the great things your child has done at school since the beginning of the year, and if necessary to make suggestions to enable him/her to have more success in months to come. Parents can also share important information that may be helpful to the teacher in dealing with their child.  In most cases the homeroom teachers will have their assistant teachers available to speak in Mongolian, but if you would like to bring your own interpreter, please do so.</p>
<p>We look forward to seeing our elementary parents during the conference time.  Secondary parents, please remember that we always enjoy your visits, so please come see us anytime.</p>

<p>Dear Parents,</p>
<p>Welcome back and we hope that you all had a fantastic time on this vacation with family and friends.<span id="more-384"></span> What a spectacular week we had here at ASU before the Tsagaan Tsar Holiday! ASU boys’ basketball team was victorious in the ASU vs. Elite School game!  In the ASU students vs. ASU staff hockey game our students won the match.  Our Kindergarten through second grade field trip to the Toy Museum was a huge success; all students were in awe of the amazing toys and puzzles.  Thursday our Student Council sponsored a Valentine’s Day Dance for the high school.  Our students came, some brought guests and all looked lovely and acted like perfect ladies and gentlemen.  It was a magical evening for all.  Thank you Ms. Gill and Mr. Nefstead, the Student Council Advisors, and the ASU Student Council for organizing this successful evening for our students.  Friday was a wondrous day.  Everyone looked magnificent in national dress and the performance at the end of the day by the Children&#8217;s Palace Performers was outstanding.  I am so very proud to say that our ASU students were a perfect audience in their behavior and appreciation.  Friday was also the last day for our “Toys for Tots” drive.  I want to thank Ms. Anna and the 1A class for sponsoring this wonderful campaign for the ASU learning community to donate items for those in need at the Verbist Care Center.  We did an outstanding job!  Captain Hagan of the US Marines came and personally thanked our first graders and then carried away the many huge boxes of things that YOU all donated for this cause.  Thank you all for your support!  ASU wants to adopt a school or an orphanage so we can continue to learn through the gift of giving, if you know of a needy organization please let us know.</p>
<p>It is hard to believe but February is winding down: we have this short week, followed by the last week in February. To be sure the ASU learning community will be soaring high with learning and reflection in this wondrous month.<!--more--><br />

<p>Please join together in room 308, at 5:00 to 6:00pm for our ASU PTA meeting.  All parents are welcome.  The meeting will be conducted in English and Mongolian.</p>
<p><strong>Information for our ASU Learning Community:</strong></p>
<p>Our PTA is sponsoring a raffle!  All students whose parents return the Parent Survey will receive an entry into the raffle.  There will be a drawing on Friday, Feb 19<sup>th</sup>.  Two winners from elementary, middle school and high school (six winners in all) will receive a prize.  So if you haven’t done so yet – please turn in your Parent Survey by Thursday afternoon.  Thank you PTA for your support in promoting this very important step in our WASC process.</p>
<p>Mr Epu our IT Coordinator has been working on our ASU webpage.  It is a work in progress, but  &#8211; it is looking great. Thank you Mr. Epu!   Please check it out and let us know what you think, and what you would like to see on our ASU website.</p>
<p>A suggestion was made at our January PTA to have a survey put in place for students to respond to the weekly ASU cafeteria menu, so they could let us know what food they liked and didn’t like.   If you would like to participate, please have your child list on the menus below what they liked or didn’t like and return them to Ms Chimgee in the Admin Office.  She will let the cafeteria personnel know the results so we can continue to improve our service in the ASU cafeteria.</p>

<h4>Dear Parents,</h4>
<p>Welcome to Second Semester.  This week brought in new electives, new semester classes for secondary students, the arrival of the Scholastic Book orders, many opportunities to talk with parents as they brought in second semester fees and chats with parents in regard to student progress and term 2 grades on reports cards. <span id="more-321"></span> Second semester fees were due January 28<sup>th</sup> and we thank all of you that paid for your children’s ASU tuition fees on time.  We appreciate your attention to this detail and your continued support of ASU as we strive for excellence in education.</p>
<p>The 2<sup>nd</sup> semester elective program started this week on Wednesday, a “Day 1”.  It was an impossible task to meet everyone’s request for electives.  As always, swimming for the elementary was extremely popular and there were more requests then could be safely allowed in the pool.  Cooking was another popular choice and almost all of the 1<sup>st</sup> – 4<sup>th</sup> grade students wanted this elective and as I’m sure you know – it was not possible to give this elective to around 150 students at the same time!  I had to make an alternate choice and decided to provide an extra PE class for grades 2 and 4.  Promoting health for our children is part of our mission and I know we all want happy and healthy children that incorporate exercise for fun into their daily lives.  For all grades, teachers submitted names of their students that they felt needed extra ESL support, a study hall or core assistance in Math, Science and Social Studies.  These teacher requests were implemented and these students were assigned these vitally important electives to help them succeed and be successful learners at ASU.</p>
<p><strong>Here’s what’s happening this coming week, February 8<sup>th</sup> through 12.</strong></p>
<p>It will be a “Week 1” for the swimming schedule.  <!--more--></p>
<p>On Thursday and Friday ASU will be celebrating the Tsagaan Tsar, Mongolian New Moon or New Years Festival.  We will be discussing Mongolian culture and play traditional Mongolian games throughout the day.</p>
<p><strong>Thursday, February 11th<br />
</strong>There will be a trip to the Traditional Toy Museum for all K- 2  classes who are interested.  Teachers who will be taking their classes to the museum will be sending a permission and information note home.</p>
<p><strong>Friday, February 12</strong><br />
Traditional Dress Day -<strong> </strong>We are encouraging all students and teachers to dress in traditional dress.  Students and teachers will be visiting other classrooms to show off their elaborate and interesting traditional wear.  I’m getting my camera batteries charged for lots of awesome photos!</p>
<p>&#8220;Children&#8217;s Palace Performers&#8221; will perform a traditional Mongolian show at our school between the hours of 2pm &#8211; 3pm In the auditorium.</p>
<p><strong>Information for our ASU Learning Community:</strong></p>
<p>ASU has added an additional day to the Tsagaan Tsar Holiday.  There will be no school on Monday and Tuesday, Feb 15 and 16.</p>

<h4>Dear Parents, Students, and Staff,</h4>
<p>This week has been filled with assessments for all students.  Our secondary had their first semester exams and then on Thursday and Friday the entire student body participated in All-School assessments in Language Arts, Math and Writing.<span id="more-319"></span> We had a fantastic turn out for the PTA meeting on January 20<sup>th</sup>; parents participated in several meaningful discussions on topics such as: the cafeteria, first aid, health and safety, the swimming program and the PTA’s plan to establish a “Parents in Classrooms” program.  Our next meeting will be February 24<sup>th</sup>. On Friday all of our 2<sup>nd</sup> – 5<sup>th</sup> grade students went on a field trip to the Drama Theater for a wonderful puppet show.  Next week our Kindergarteners and first grade students will go on the Puppet Show field trip.</p>
<p>Parents mark your calendars and make plans to be at ASU for some very special events!</p>
<p><strong>Thursday, January 28<sup>th</sup> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Winter Concert</strong></p>
<p>On Thursday, January 28th, at 7:00 PM, ASU&#8217;s music students in grades 6 through 11 will be performing in a choir concert celebrating the richness and complexity of life. They have worked extremely hard to prepare their songs, and would love to have you there to share this experience with them. Parents, please note that your child, if in grades 6-9, is required to attend, and if in grades 10-11, must attend if they are in a music elective. The performance is a course requirement. Students should be at ASU by 6:15. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you there!</p>
<p><strong>Friday, January 29<sup>th</sup> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Secondary Parent Teacher Conferences</strong></p>
<p><strong>There will be no school for students in grades 6-11 on January 29<sup>th.</sup></strong><sup> </sup> Parents of secondary students are requested to come to ASU with their secondary child between 8:15 and 3:30, pick-up the term 2 report card in homeroom and then go on to conference with each of your child’s teachers.  Report cards will not be given out to students, only to the parents of the students on this day.</p>
<p><strong>Elementary Mid-Term Progress Reports</strong></p>
<p>Elementary progress reports will be sent home on Friday.  Classroom teachers will use this form to notify parents of their child’s progress so far this term.  If your child brings a progress report home you must sign and return the bottom portion and send it back to the classroom teacher by February 2<sup>nd</sup>.</p>
<p><strong>ASU Parent Survey</strong></p>
<p>All ASU parents will be receiving a survey on Friday.  It is extremely important that you fill out this survey and return it to ASU as soon as possible.  We will have a box in the lobby tin which  you may place your completed survey.  This will allow you to answer the survey anonymously.  The data discovered from your responses on this survey will be used for school improvements and is an important component for the WASC accreditation process.  Parents of grade 6 – 11 students will receive this survey with the report cards.  It would be greatly appreciated if you would fill out the survey and place it in the collection box before you leave school on Friday or you may send it back to school with your child.  For parents of grade K-5 students, this survey will be sent home on Friday.  Please fill out the survey and return it to school as soon as possible.</p>

<p><strong>Dear Parents, Students, and Staff,</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Welcome back and Happy New Year!  We have 3 weeks left in January and they will be filled with learning and delightful events.  January 18-20 will be 1<sup>st</sup> semester exams for our grade 6-11 students.  Then on January 21<sup>st</sup> and 22<sup>nd</sup>, ASU will have All-School exams each morning. <span id="more-317"></span> Parents please plan on attending the PTA meeting in room 308 on Jan 20<sup>th</sup> at 5:00 pm.  On January 28<sup>th</sup> all secondary music students will have a performance after school in the auditorium.  On January 29<sup>th</sup> secondary students will bring home report cards.</p>
<p>The ASU Swimming program will begin on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 &#8211; this is a Day 1, Week 1.  Swimming will be on a Week 1 and Week 2 schedule  &#8211; as well as the Day 1, 2, 3, 4 schedule.  Here is the Swimming schedule.  Swimming classes will be during regular scheduled PE classes and will run through May.  Swimming is part of the P.E. grade and will be evaluated on participation and effort.  Therefore, it is imperative that all students come prepared to swim, with a swimming suit, swim cap, goggles and big towel, on the days they are scheduled for swimming classes.  We are happy to welcome back Ms Sersendagina; she will be our swimming instructor once again this year.  This is an excellent opportunity for our students; please, call ASU if you have any questions.</p>
<p>As you can see, there is lots to look forward to in January at ASU.  So mark your calendar because we are looking forward to seeing you at the PTA meeting on Jan 20 and the performance on Jan 28.</p>
